Usually we meet to watch and discuss films. But we also attend special events: trivia contests, quarterly mixers, Oscar parties, and advance screenings. Following are descriptions of the types of events we host.

Movies in Theaters

When DCC was founded in 2004 (see our Club History page), members would watch a film together in a theater, then go to a nearby restaurant for snacks and drinks and to discuss the film. Movies in theaters (and sometimes libraries and bars) are still our mainstay events. Our favorite theaters are the Sie FilmCenter, the Landmark theaters, and the metro area Alamo Drafthouses, but we often go to the big multiplexes, too.

Deep Dives

"Deep dives" are events where we watch films at home, then meet at a bar or restaurant to discuss them. The format of these events varies: sometimes we'll watch several related films, such as Spike Lee films or Japanese ghost stories, and sometimes we'll read a book and watch a related film, such as Mickey 7 (the book) and Mickey 17 (the movie). We limit attendance to these events to optimize the conversation, but if there's enough interest, we'll often have a "spillover" event to accommodate members who couldn't get into the first one.

Discussions with John Anzalone

We are extremely privileged to have John Anzalone in the club. John is a retired film professor from Skidmore College in New York, and he now volunteers his time to educate Denverites about film. John hosts Chez Artiste Classics at the Landmark Greenwood Village, and he also holds events for the Denver Public Library. At the Chez Artiste Classics screenings, he introduces the film and leads a discussion afterward. For the Denver Public Library events, members watch a film at home, then meet with John either at a library or virtually on Zoom. John discusses the film, playing clips to illustrate.

Team Trivia at Alamo Drafthouse

Nearly every week, DCC fields a team or two for Geeks Who Drink trivia at an area Alamo Drafthouse (usually Sloans Lake). The questions cover a wide range of topics, but there are always some about movies. See our Team Trivia page for more details.

Advance Screenings

Every month or so, representatives from a movie studio offer us seats for a free screening of an upcoming film. The screenings take place at theaters all around the metro area. Since the number of seats is limited, we give priority to active members of the club when distributing them. See our Advance Screenings page for details.

Woodbury Film Club

On the second Saturday of each month, the Woodbury Branch of the Denver Public Library screens a film and holds a discussion afterward. We go every month! The librarians are great at finding excellent, under-the-radar films. The screenings are free, and the library provides light snacks for attendees.

Mixers and Other Parties

Who needs a movie? Sometimes we just get together! We have a quarterly mixer at Improper City, where we eat, drink, mingle, play games--and yes, talk about movies. We also attend the Oscars party at the Sie FilmCenter every year.
