Oscar Nominations

The nominations are out! What do you still have to catch up on? What are the snubs? What should win/will win?

I’ll likely see the live action and animated shorts packages. Of the feature film categories I care about I have two to see for International (Voice of Hind Rijab and Sirat, both coming to theaters soon) and two for Animated (Arco, coming to theaters soon, and Little Amelie, available for digital rental).

Otherwise there’s a couple oddballs in the miscellaneous categories like song, makeup and visual effects that I don’t put much stock in, and the documentary categories that I don’t prefer as I find documentary often formally uninteresting and actually less honest than fiction filmmaking.

I still have to see F1, Frankenstein, and Marty Supreme, none of which I'm excited about. I'd rather have seen another 3 international films on the Best Picture list.

Others I still want to see: Blue Moon, If I Had Legs, Weapons, It Was Just an Accident, The Voice of Hind Rajab, all the documentaries, all the shorts.

I'm bummed that Amy Madigan is the only nom from Weapons, that was one of my favorite theater experiences of the year, and still held up on streaming for me. Eddington is another movie I loved, but I can understand why the Academy didn't like it. No nominations for No Other Choice was surprising as well.

I still need to see Sirat, Voice of Hind Rijab, and the Secret Agent... and I guess F1 and Song Sung Blue. Also looking forward to the Testament of Ann Lee, I can't say it was a snub because I haven't seen it but based on what people were saying I thought Amanda Seyfried might have received a nomination.

I still need to see Train Dreams, Hamnet, and The Secret Agent. I'm dragging my feet on Hamnet...not sure why. I suppose it just seems really depressing in a way that doesn't seem particularly rewarding.

I was surprised Eddington and The Testament were left off the list. Both of those were easily better than F1- and if you're going to recognize Bugonia and Weapons, I don't know why you wouldn't shout out those two films.

I've got the shorts day at The Mayan bookmarked on my calendar! One of my fave film days of the year.

I saw Hamnet and Frankenstein…meh! I loved Blue Moon and Marty Supreme. I have tried to watch Sinners, but am not enthused. I was disappointed in Bugonia…Poor Things was much better. I haven’t seen Train Dreams, The Secret Agent or Weapons. I think I am way out of step with the Oscars as I don’t agree with many of their picks.

I watched Song Sung Blue this week and didn't hate it as much as I thought I would (it's not great, but Oscar has made me watch worse). I'll also force myself to watch F1 soon. Catch-up I'm looking forward to: Blue Moon, Arco, The Ugly Stepsister (because Aurora loved it) and almost all of the docs. And shorts of course!

The Ugly Stepsister made my top 10 of last year. Best Norwegian film of the year.

Sunday I’m doing a Hind Rijab/Arco double feature. Then I just have Sirat and the shorts bundles I’ll want to catch up with.

Carly I'm looking forward to that one because of the wild divergence of opinions on it! When I first heard about it I thought it sounded insufferable, the trailer just reinforced that (are we supposed to ignore that Ethan Hawke is clearly standing in a hole!?) But so much critical acclaim... And also people I know who hated it! I might just stream that one tonight because I'm so curious!
